Visual Arts

The outstanding scenery, natural light and evocative atmosphere of the islands of Mull and Iona have provided inspiration for artists for generations. This tradition continues today, with many island residents working in visual arts and crafts, establishing a dynamic creative community.

The Mull and Iona Arts Trail features 16 venues where you can meet the makers of handmade, original and unique visual arts and crafts in their studios and see the lovely locations and interesting spaces in which they work. It is a fascinating opportunity to speak to artists and learn about their methods and sources of inspiration. In the artists’ studios you will find a variety of art forms from drawing and painting, ceramics, textiles and crafts, to jewellery and glass. If you like their work you might want to make a commission or take a piece home.

You can also see the work of other local artists throughout the Mull and Iona Art Trail displayed in galleries, arts & crafts shops, outdoors in the landscape and even while enjoying some cake in a café with a gallery. Visual arts venues where you can see a selection of art include An Tobar Arts Centre in Tobermory, Calgary Arts, South West Mull Makers in Fionnphort and Oran Creative Crafts, a craft workers co-operative on the Island of Iona.

If you would like to find artists working in a particular medium, browse the Artists Directory for information on individual artists or to make a purchase online. You can do this from anywhere, but we do recommend visiting our beautiful islands in the Hebrides for an amazing cultural experience.
